# doc.silverstripe.org
2019-12-18 23:54:23 +01:00
This repository contains the source code powering [the Silverstripe CMS
developer documentation website](https://docs.silverstripe.org) and
[userhelp website ](https://userhelp.silverstripe.org ).
2019-11-15 00:19:35 +01:00
This application is build on [Gatsby ](https://gatsbyjs.com ), a static
site generator based on [React ](https://reactjs.org ). It sources content
2022-07-12 02:45:06 +02:00
from the [silverstripe/developer-docs ](https://github.com/silverstripe/developer-docs )
2019-11-15 00:19:35 +01:00
repository for each major release.
2020-01-16 22:26:52 +01:00
**This repository does NOT contain any documentation.**
2022-07-12 02:45:06 +02:00
The developer documentation is stored in the [silverstripe/developer-docs repository ](https://github.com/silverstripe/developer-docs )),
in the `en` folder. For example, the documentation for the
Silverstripe CMS 4.x is stored in
[https://github.com/silverstripe/developer-docs/tree/4/en ](https://github.com/silverstripe/developer-docs/tree/4/en ).
2019-11-15 00:19:35 +01:00
2022-07-12 02:45:06 +02:00
The userhelp documentation is stored in the [silverstripe/silverstripe-userhelp-content repo ](https://github.com/silverstripe/silverstripe-userhelp-content/ ).

## What to update when creating a new pre-release major branch, making a stable major release, or making a major EOL
When **creating a new major branch for a pre-release major version**
- Make sure you've added a new major branch to both `silverstripe/developer-docs` and `silverstripe/silverstripe-userhelp-content`
- Add the new major to `sources-docs.js` and `sources-user.js`
2024-09-05 04:58:50 +02:00
- Add new major branches for various modules as defined in `sources-docs.js` and `sources-user.js` as well
2022-07-22 02:18:31 +02:00
- Add the new major to the version select in `src/components/Header.tsx`
- Add the major to the `PRE_RELEASE` array in the `getVersionMessage` function in `src/utils/nodes.ts`
2023-04-13 06:54:23 +02:00
- Add the new major version to the [algolia crawler script ](https://crawler.algolia.com/admin/crawlers/3d14ccdd-f9ae-4957-bc0a-5b21b4c29af3/configuration/edit )
2022-07-22 02:18:31 +02:00
For **new stable releases** , you will need to do the following
- Remove the major from the `PRE_RELEASE` array in the `getVersionMessage` function in `src/utils/nodes.ts`
- Update the `getDefaultVersion` function's return value to the new stable major in `src/utils/nodes.ts`
- Update redirects in `netlify.toml`
2023-05-05 07:07:47 +02:00
- Update `index.tsx` to navigate to the new stable major
2022-07-22 02:18:31 +02:00
When a **major goes EOL** , add the major to the `EOL` array in the `getVersionMessage` function in `src/utils/nodes.ts`

## Installation
To set up a local instance of [doc.silverstripe.org ](https://github.com/silverstripe/doc.silverstripe.org ):
* Clone this repository to an empty directory
```
git clone https://github.com/silverstripe/doc.silverstripe.org path/to/ssdocs
```
2019-11-19 01:55:33 +01:00
2019-11-20 00:03:17 +01:00
### Docker install
No local NodeJS nor gatsby-cli is required for this option.
2022-07-12 02:45:06 +02:00
* Make sure docker and docker-compose are installed and docker daemon is running
* Simply use `./docker/run` to run gatsby commands
* `./docker/run build` would be equal to run `gatsby build` within a container
* `./docker/run develop -p 8000` would run `gatsby develop -p 8000` within a container.
2019-11-20 00:03:17 +01:00
### Native install
* Install [Gatsby CLI ](https://gatsbyjs.com )
2020-01-16 22:26:52 +01:00
## Developing
Once cloned, from the root of the repository, run the command `yarn dev-docs`
to instantiate a development server. This will consume all of the markdown files in both major release
branches and allow you to browse the developer documentation site on `http://localhost:8000` by default
(see the [Gatsby docs ](https://www.gatsbyjs.org/docs/ ) for instructions on customising the port).
2019-11-19 01:55:33 +01:00
## Building
To test a static build of the site, first create a production environment file.
2019-11-15 00:19:35 +01:00
```
2019-11-19 01:55:33 +01:00
cp .env.development .env.production
2019-11-15 00:19:35 +01:00
```
2019-11-19 01:55:33 +01:00
Then, run the build.
2019-11-15 00:19:35 +01:00
```
2020-01-16 22:26:52 +01:00
yarn build-docs
yarn serve
2023-04-13 06:54:23 +02:00
# or with docker
./docker/run build & & ./docker/run serve -p 8000
2019-11-15 00:19:35 +01:00
```
These commands will give you an exact representation of how the site will run on a production server, with
2023-04-13 06:54:23 +02:00
statically generated html files, css purging, and server-side rendering.

2019-12-18 23:54:23 +01:00
## Toggling between docs and userhelp
Whether the application uses the `docs.silverstripe.org` content or `userhelp.silverstripe.org` is determined
by the environment variable, `DOCS_CONTEXT` . You can set this in the `.env.development` file, or use one of
the script shortcuts:
```
yarn dev-docs
yarn dev-user
yarn build-docs
yarn build-user
```
2019-11-19 01:55:33 +01:00
## Authoring
You can make changes directly to the source markdown files and get live updates in the development
2022-07-12 02:45:06 +02:00
server without having to rebuild the app or even refresh the browser. The clones of the `silverstripe/developer-docs`
2019-11-19 01:55:33 +01:00
repositories are in the `.cache/gatsby-source-git` folder in the root of this project. There are subfolders
2022-07-12 02:45:06 +02:00
for `3/` and `4/` , respective to their branch names. You can edit the files in `en` from there.
2019-11-19 01:55:33 +01:00
Just don't forget to merge your changes upstream once you're done. Building the gatsby app will not preserve
your content changes, since the remote repositories are the source of truth.
